------------------ Paul. ------------------ ------------------ I can't vouch for its accuracy as I'm no weapons or armour expert as I've said before. Paul. ------------------deborahknowles Can someone clever tell me when helmets started having hinged visors in medieval Europe (doesn't matter what country)? I'd be very grateful for an exact year - or at least the decade! Thanks!
"She was full more blissful on to see Than is the newe perejonette tree"Paul Hello Deborah, I'm no expert on the subject of medieval armour but I'm pretty sure that at the time of the Norman conquest that the helmets or "Helms" that were worn consisted of a fixed "Nasal" and that they could not be lifted above the face.
The visor that you refer to was a little later, possibly in the early 13th century.Merlin I'd say late 13th century, but I'm no expert as well. Queuxgropius I can't recall seeing any medieval illustrations that display a hinged visor before time of the battle of Crecy. So I'd estimate early to mid fourteenth century. Merlin I found at least two of them pictured in the famous «Codex Manesse», which was produced here in Zurich in the years 1305 to 1340.

"She was full more blissful on to see Than is the newe perejonette tree"deborahknowles I've narrowed it down to the second quarter of the 14th century. Thanks for everyone's help!
"She was full more blissful on to see Than is the newe perejonette tree"Paul Hi Deborah, I'm sticking with the 13th century here simply because I believe that body armour would have been more important than ever before.
The crossbow was becoming more powerful as a lethal weapon and so armour had to develop at the same pace or quicker.
I found this site for you http://www.medieval-spell.com/Medieval-Helmets.html
deborahknowles Ok! Thanks!
